This annual event features dancers from all over Ohio and beyond, showing off their most freakish, frightening, silly, and FUN Halloween routines. Costumes are encouraged and the ticket cost is only $5!

Among the performers are the Oasis Dancers, Troupe Zephyr, the ever-fabulous Anaya Gypsy, Qamara, and the PHABdominals (new tribal fusion troupe from Kira's Oasis). Troupe Roja: Must-Haves for Lebanese Fest

It's that time of the year again...Troupe Roja will be performing at the 17th Annual Lebanese Festival!

I'm especially excited about this year's performance. After last year's Roja debut at the Lebanese Festival, which included everything from Khaleegy dance to American cabaret to Flamenco-inspired fusion, I am relieved that we will not be fussing with so many costumes this year. (Nothing like frantic costume changes in under two minutes in 90 degree heat backstage while breathless from performing the previous number...) BUT the show will be no less spectacular; Roja will be debuting FIVE choreographies never performed at the Lebanese Festival, two of which are original and have not been performed anywhere yet!

This year, we focused on the variety within the genre of Middle Eastern music. Our set will include an acapella zill (finger cymbals) number, the classic "Zeina", a fast accordion solo with Isis wings, a Hossam Ramsy drum duet, and a Lebanese pop song fused with Egyptian melaya leff dance and debke. And--I am very excited about this--Roja will have a special guest performing during the set. It will be her very first performance and what a venue to step out into the stage lights!

So, for her (and any other dancers wondering what to bring to an outdoor show in 80 degree weather) here is...

Zattana's Top 10 List of Lebanese Festival Must-Haves for Performers

1. Costume (duh) that includes top, skirt, harem pants (required for dancing on the raised stage), dance shoes, and belly net cover (required for this show)

2. An adequate cover up/abaya/moo-moo (required for any show). A veil is NOT a cover up!

3. Jewelry (earrings, rings, bracelets, arm bands, and/or necklace) and bindis (if you like to wear them)

4. Makeup (you will need it for touch-ups), fake eyelashes, eyelash adhesive

5. A wash cloth to dab the sweat off your brow backstage between songs

6. A folding fan to use before/after the show and a water bottle (it is HOT, stay hydrated)

7. Safety pins, dress tape, industrial staples, or whatever you need to keep your costume in place

8. Zills and melaya (props of choice for this year's show), CD with music/announcer's notes, troupe sign, and easel

9. Clothes to change into after the show, including shoes and (ahem) under-things

10. (optional) Camera, sunglasses, cash for shopping, snacks, friends, family...

It helps to carry an "emergency kit" for the troupe as well (credit for that fantastic idea goes to Alan Louie) and I always bring it with me to shows when I'm performing with Egyptian Breeze or Roja. But that's a topic for another blog!

I hope you will come out to the Lebanese Festival on August 28th to see Roja's set at 8pm, to support our brave new mystery-dancer, and to see the other fabulous troupes as well. It's going to be a great show!

Troupe Roja: 17th Annual Dayton Lebanese Festival

Roja will be performing a brand-new set of dances at the 17th Annual Dayton Lebanese Festival! Show time is Saturday, 8pm.

The festival will run Friday, Aug 27 - Sunday, Aug 29. Admission is FREE!

The festival features authentic Middle Eastern food and pastries, traditional dancing by St. Ignatius Debbke Troupe, belly dancing by Conchi and her dance troupe Al Hambra; and dance troupes Raks Devi, Troupe Roja, Eqyptian Breeze, and others.

In addition, there will be amusement rides and games for all ages and, for adults, various games of chance including poker, showdown, and blackjack.

The LA Weekly calls them “cross pollinated gypsy music….one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet.” Formed in 2005, the band includes two explosive violins, the world's best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, trombone, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, accordion and one little banjolele. Deb Rubin
Deb Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT has been a life-long dancer and performer, trained and proficient in many styles, including Salsa, West African, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, 5-rhythms, Contact Improv, Gymnastics, and of course Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. She has been a 5+year core member, and co-choreographer with the ground-breaking, trend-setting Ultragypsy Bellydance Theater, until Fall, 2007, and a regular sub for Jill Parker’s classes, who is known by many as the founder of tribal fusion. Deb has also studied extensively from, and been creatively influenced by Rachel Brice and Mardi Love, as well as Zoe Jakes, Mira Betz, and Heather Stants. She also holds a level 1 certification from Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance. A sponge for learning, and a seeker of continually deepening her repetoire and relationship to the dance, Deb is well versed within the tribal fusion genre, having also studied with Kami Liddle, Frederique, Amy Sigil, FCBD, Cera Byer, and others. Currently, Deb teaches and performs nationally and internationally, offering her yogic approach and unique stylization of Tribal Fusion Bellydance. Tribe.net: Deb Rubin workshops in Indianapolis - July 11

Deb will teach 2 workshops on July 11. Each workshop will be 2 hours in length.

The schedule will be as follows:
1-3: Bringing more Decadence to your Dance
3-4: Break
4-6: Layering and Levels - A Core Integrated Approach

"Bringing more Decadence to your Dance" is a slow and slinky workshop. I took that workshop at TF and it was amazing! We'll have a shorter version but it will blow your mind!

"Layering and Levels - A Core Integrated Approach": the name describes it well! It will be uptempo. Here's Deb's description: Layering and Levels will also include Lots of Locks, traveLLing, Deconstructing Layering, PLus other things that start with "L'. :) We'LL Learn Layering, and appLy upper body patterns to various lower body shapes, patterns, footwork, level changes, weird stances, etc. PLus, create your own combos and incarnations from the materiaL.

Given that this is short notice, I'm pricing this as cheap as I can make it. So 50$ for both workshops or 25$ each. Additional fees will apply if paying via Paypal.

Also, the workshops will be at Aiki Concepts (5129 E 65th St.) and, given the small size of the room, the number of participants will be very limited. We're talking 16 lucky few.

A life-long dancer trained in many styles, since a very young age, Deb Rubin's journey into Tribal Fusion Belly Dance began 8 years ago when she wandered in to Jill Parker's class, in San Francisco, and was hooked. Now an internationally sought-after instructor and performer, Deb's solid foundation of Tribal Fusion was rooted through her 5 years as a member and co-choreographer with the legendary, trend-setting Ultra-Gypsy Belly Dance Theater, and as a regular sub for Jill Parker's classes until Fall, 2007, who is known by many as the "mamma of modern tribal fusion".
